The Healing Power of Art: A Sanctuary for Women Healing Their Way Through Trauma

Finding Light in Darkness

Dear sisters,

Life can be challenging, especially when we’ve experienced trauma. It’s during such times that finding solace and strength becomes crucial. One powerful way to navigate these waters is through art a creative outlet that transforms pain into beauty and silence into voice.

This post explores how creating art can be a sanctuary for healing, referencing insights from CNBC’s article on the critical role of art in tough times. Let’s embark on this journey together, discovering how art heals us and inspires others.

Why Create Art During Hard Times?

Art is more than just an activity; it’s a therapeutic tool that helps us process emotions. Drawing from research by experts like Dr. Cathy Malchiodi, creating art can aid in healing by allowing expression beyond words. It’s a safe space to explore feelings and find peace.

How Our Art Impacts Others

Our creative expressions don’t just benefit ourselves; they ripple outward, touching lives around us:

  1. Fostering Connection: Art bridges gaps, connecting people through shared emotions.
  2. Providing Hope: A painting or poem can inspire someone feeling lost to see possibility.
  3. Encouraging Self-Expression: It validates others’ experiences and gives them permission to express their own pain.
  4. Boosting Local Economies: Supporting local artists revitalizes communities, creating jobs and fostering growth.
  5. Promoting Mental Health Awareness: Art challenges stigma, encouraging conversations about mental health.
  6. Inspiring Collective Action: Creative works can motivate social change by highlighting important issues.

Practical Steps to Begin Creating

You don’t need formal training or expensive materials. Start with what you have:

  • Choose Your Medium: Paint, draw, write, sculpt whatever resonates.
  • Let Go of Perfection: Focus on the process, not the outcome.
  • Join a Community: Share your work and connect with others.

Resources for Inspiration

Explore these platforms to find inspiration and community:

  1. Pinterest & Instagram: Discover creative ideas and follow artists who inspire you.
  2. Art of Healing: A platform offering art therapy resources.
  3. Creative Women’s Circle: Connect with women using creativity for healing.
  4. Meetup Groups: Find local groups focused on art and wellness.

Bringing Faith into Art

Incorporating faith into your creative process can deepen its impact:

  • Use art as worship, creating pieces inspired by scripture or moments of reflection.
  • Journal verses through painting or sculpture, blending faith with creativity.
  • Let your art be a testament to healing and hope, honoring Yahweh in every stroke.

Art as a Sanctuary

Art is more than a hobby; it’s a lifeline. For women who have experienced trauma, creating art can be a sanctuary, a place of healing, connection, and inspiration. By embracing our creativity, we not only heal ourselves but also touch the lives of others, fostering hope in our communities.

Remember, you are not alone. Through art, we find strength and light even in life’s darkest moments.

Final Note:

I would like to leave you with this final thought taken from Exodus 31:1-11 where we learn that all manners of art and craft are a gift given to us by God.

Bezalel and Oholiab

31 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent— the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its stand— 10 and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.”

I’m Brittney

I am a 36-year-old survivor, artist, writer, and advocate who has walked through some of life’s darkest valleys and emerged with a radiant, unshakeable faith. Having endured childhood sexual trauma, decades of domestic violence, temporary paralysis, a coma, memory loss, and the heartbreaking loss of custody of my children as the result. I have had to rebuild my life piece by piece, hand in hand with the Lord. I have had to trust Him to protect, heal and reunite my family. I have had to trust Him to put me back together and turn my trauma into a testimony that honors Him and helps women who are where I have been. Now a two-time cancer and heart failure survivor, I use my story to illuminate hope for others, reminding women that God is still a God of miracles, restoration, and new beginnings. Through my blog, I combine faith, creativity, and lived experience to uplift survivors of abuse, helping them rediscover gratitude, reclaim their identity, and step boldly into the healing God has promised.
